Story Excerpt: Sharing my book

Today I met someone while travelling to work.

During the ride, I was engrossed in my book but couldn’t really ignore how restless this woman was beside me. She bent to see the title of the novel I was reading, Interview with The Vampire, and leaned over to read the page I was on. It was a palpable interest that both amused and irritated me. I really dislike being bothered while I’m reading (hate would be too strong a word). And she kept on, so much so that I had to turn and look at her.

She’s pretty, from what I remember. She has soft, caramel skin and freckles scattered about her small nose. Her black hair, the ends colored a tinted kind of red, was pulled back and up into an unkempt bun. She smiled at me; a really pretty, friendly smile that made me smile back and forget my irritation with her. She looked really young but I could tell she’s at least three or four years older than me.

“Can I see your book?” It was a question, but not at the same time.

“Sure.” I couldn’t say no, really.

Her smile became a full blown grin and she took it from me, running her hand over the cover as though it were sacred. Her gaze was intent; eyes bright with interest and excitement. I smiled, watching her.

She gave it back after reading the back. I continued reading. She interrupted again.

“I want to read it with you.”

“Okay…” I replied softly, my tone a little uncertain. If she’d sensed my slight discomfort, she ignored it as she eagerly came closer to me.

We shared the book, using her hand as a partition but I could hardly see the words on my page so I gave it to her. “Take it.”

“Are you sure?” But she didn’t really care that she’d interrupted my reading, already holding the book in her hands, though she didn’t look away from me until I nodded.

So while she read, I just leaned back and stared out the window at the sea as the bus drove by it. But then that made me tired, so I kept myself up the rest of the way; and thought of ways to write this entry.

Hope you all had a great Monday!
