Journal of anime ramblings, fiction works and reflections
I’ll be picking a Yandere. I never really remembered this term, only Tsundere, Kuudere and Dandere. Yandere is the collective term for those characters who appear innocent and sweet but actually have a psychotic trait lurking around that stems from obsession. Yandere has two categories:
Possessive: Losing their love is not an option for a Yandere, so to avoid the chances of that happening, they’ll go as far as to kill their crush’s family and friends who may pose a possible threat -or none at all.
Obsessive: Simply, this type will kill off his/her’s competition right away to have a better advantage with the love interest.
My favorite Yandere is Lucy, from Elfen Lied. While I disliked her for killing Kouta’s sister and father, her pain was relatable (and at that time, she’d been young so her murdering innocent people could probably be blamed on her genetic inheritance – though that’s still no excuse). She felt emotions and acted on them impulsively, not in the best way but at least she made an attempt to change by not killing Yuka.
I wouldn’t have minded if she did.
This is the furthest she took her jealousy, and that’s some control she portrayed because she could have used her vectors to rip Yuka to shreds. Her love for Kouta was the only thing that stopped her from doing a lot of things; like annihilating the human race for one. She never wanted him to despise her, and did what she could to preserve his care for her. I guess that sets Lucy in the Possessive group of Yanderes, even though she wasn’t a far cry from obsessive.
I liked her Nyu split personality. It was really cute and it worked in her favor – while there’s one side of her that takes some real getting used to, there’s another side that makes her likable. It was good for character development when she became more conscious of her actions in the later episodes of the anime and apologized to Kouta for what she did.
I was sad that the series ended with her leaving, but I guess it was for the better. She was a good character, conflicted and irrational yes, but still had some very good qualities. I enjoyed watching her growth as a character.
I’ve also heard that Gasai Yuno from Mirai Nikki is a psychotic but good character, so I have that anime down on my watch list for Spring break.
