The red ribbon floated on the murky water, its bright presence seeming to cleanse the darkness around it. Her screams had faded into the gurgles of the river; her small body hidden beneath the foam, probably already moving downstream. He sat on the bank, his head in his hands, his red eyes peering through the cracks of his fingers. He waited to see if his daughter would spring up from beneath the surface and laugh at his terrified expression. But it didn’t happen. A harsh sob rocked his shoulders. What had he done?
I think I should give the ten word story challenges a shot. I’ve never been good at that, but I can’t really say that unless I try.
