Anime challenge number dos!
Favorite anime you’ve watched so far…?
Seriously? Seriously anime challenge? How can you ask me to look past the awesomeness of aaallll the animes I’ve watched and ask me to pick ONE as a favorite?? There’s no such thing. It’s unheard of. Not really, but excuse my melodrama and complaining. I can cross a few off my list and say “meh…those were iight.” But for many others, it’s not so easy. BUT! I must make this decision and it will not be driven by biases…>.>
Let me list all the animes I’ve watched so far:
There are many others but not listed since I’m not through with them. The ones I’ve crossed off on the list are those that I don’t view as favorites. The ones with the asteriks are the favorites influenced by complete biases.
I don’t know how to judge this. This needs to be done though. I would choose Angel Beats! because it made me cry over and over again, I rewatched episodes and the jokes never wore off, along with the seriousness.
I loved all the characters, the deep story line and the action of it all. It is a favorite but second to Darker Than Black. I’m judging this according to how engaged the anime had me. Darker Than Black had me completely engaged. Completely.
I loved the story line, the plot and concept of the contractors – persons who exchange their humanity for powers and pay the price by doing something that they really hate. For eg. this lady who was an opera singer, got the power of using her vocal chords as a destructive sonic wave for the price of either chewing or smoking cigarettes (which she hates).
Hei, the protagonist of the story has an inner conflict, debating on his humanity versus his contractor self. His powers are a mystery since he does not have to pay a price. It’s debatable that his huge consumption of food is the price he has to pay. To me though, it just seems as if he enjoys food. The fight scenes were great, I loved his skill -electricity manipulation – and his attire. I have a thing for black suits (and that is not a bias!). The only annoying thing was how easily his mask would break. He must stock up on a thousand of them because each time he goes to battle, at even the slightest touch, the mask breaks. There have been so many times his real identity could have been discovered, but he managed to escape by deliberate coincidences.
Yin, is one of the greatest supporting characters. Her character was very compelling and over time, I grew emotional for her when she had recollections of her past and when her emotions grew for Hei. The Gaiden OVA series were the best because my ship got some subtle nudges of action. YinxHei.
For a contractor, Hei was solely driven by his emotions and it gave him character, even though he pretended to be an indifferent S.O.B. He was still great. July was another favorite of mine, he was a “doll” – an artificial human created by the Syndicate to support select contractors. I had such a tearjerker moment when he finally began to develop feelings and learnt to smile.
Without the Gaiden OVA series, the second season of DTB would seem a little crappy because Hei turned into a drunk, ruthless and uncaring person and that sort of transition would seem melodramatic. Also, a lot of what happened in the second season is linked to the OVA series. To me, there were little to no loopholes in the plot and I loved the plot twist. Darken Than Black was just amazing. It didn’t take itself too seriously, the conflicts worked well with the overall story and each character had just the right amount of development.
End of ramble.
…Not to mention how awesome the first OP song was by Abringdon Boy School. Howling~
Okay. Complete end of ramble.
