The Eternal Summer: Sousuke vs. Haru

Sousuke is going to make himself a thorn in Haru’s side, isn’t he? A cock blocker (I use this term loosely) to the friendship that just got mended, huh? Free 5As it turns out, Sousuke and Rin were best friends at Sano Elementary before Rin transferred to Iwatobi (is transferring a trend for Rin?). He had been attending Tokitsu High School, which has a strong swim team but transferred to Samezuka to finish high school in his hometown. I think his transfer is a matter of reuniting with his best friend.  He’s actually doing well for himself and got scouted. From Rin’s reaction, and looking back at the previous episode, it would seem this is actually what he would want for Haru and Makoto. Because it would be such a waste for them to not move forward with the talents bestowed upon them by Poseidon. Free 2This episode was laced with tension in the later half between Sousuke and Haru. Goro, the former coach for Haru’s team, decided to host a Splash Fest as the grand opening for their new swimming club. To end the events for the fest, Haru suggested a relay finale. Makoto called Rin and asked him, along with his team, to be their friendly competitors for the fest and he agreed. Free 3 When Haru was alone, Sousuke came up on him and left him with a few warning words. Sousuke is upset because of what happened during the Regionals of the last season; back when Rin was being a prick. Pause. Does he even know how their rivalry started? How can he when he was an outsider looking in, at that moment? Rin depressed Was he there when Rin was going through this?? The nerve. I understand that they were best friends in elementary school, but that was at an elementary stage. Rin has changed, so he is not at liberty to feel as if he still knows Rin inside out. Things have changed since then; while he may still know the way Rin thinks on some things, he doesn’t know everything. Rin needed closure (along with taking care of his other issues and tissues) and went into that tournament to get exactly that. But that he is still overprotective of Rin, sheds some light into the depth of their friendship and that the connection hasn’t faded. In some other setting, I don’t think Sousuke would be too far off the yandere mark. Free 6 Besides that, I do think he is a great competitor and Haru knows this. He definitely knows it and Sousuke makes it clear that he means business with Haru. Last year, Rin was his rival and now Sousuke’s that guy. I also believe Sousuke might be the one to give Haru that moment of epiphany to realize he actually wants to seriously pursue a swimming career and not just be free to swim; like he told Miho during his possible career interview session. Free 1 As long as he can swim, Haru doesn’t care what his profession is. So, he’d be okay as a lifeguard or as a swimming instructor. Haru, what kind of stagnant behavior? He’s got the skills but lacks the ambition to do anything but be free. And Sousuke may just be the guy to change his perspective on that part of his life. He could also be the one to break the friendship between Haru and Rin again; which I’m a bit worried about. Free 4 There’s a new guy in the cast now, Momotarou Mikoshiba, Seijuro’s younger brother He’s also the one Seijuro was actually referring to when he said a new face was coming to the Samezuka swim team. I like him a bit, and he’s going to take over for his brother as the comic relief. I just really hope Sousuke doesn’t get in the way of Haru’s friendship with Rin.
